6th European Quilt Triennial - Ramshackle Villages

The past week has been full with going to York for my mother-in-law's 95th birthday and then having the TVCT meeting on Saturday. Photos to follow.

But today I am I am talking about my Ramshackle pieces On Sunday was the opening of the 6th European Quilt Triennial in Heidelberg, Germany.

I was not able to show my piece until the show opened. But the wait is over!
As you can see, this is a collection of villages developed using the ideas garnered with the houses and villages I have been making in the Ramshackle series. If you go to that link, you can see most of the other pieces in the series and some of the chat about developing them.

For me, this piece has a lot of story to it. Each of the villages around the edges has its own character which I try to show with 'accessories': trees, windows, chimneys, bushes and so on. Some very friendly, some very scattered, some cutting themselves off in one way or another. Closer to the middle, the houses have come together from their villages and are living together. And in the centre house all have contributed to the characteristic for an even closer togetherness.
There is a lot more depth if you begin to look, but as I wrote in the accompanying artist statement, I wanted to say something about neighbourhood and community.

If you are interested in the biggest problem solving, which was how to knock back the busy print so you could see the lines, you can read about it here. but I will say more about it tomorrow.

Also, last week my Ramshackle Hillages piece for the SAQA Benefit Donation was been featured on the SAQA blog. Also featured is an interview with Clairan Ferrono about the work.
Ramshackle Hillages is also on the SAQA Europe/Middle East blog this week.

These "hillages" are just so appealing! I can just picture the folks that live there. Great work, Sandy.

This is a great pice Sandy. The villages seem to be sailing through the landscape. Congratulations on being juried in.
