Harvest - last Sunday

Last Sunday we had our harvest celebration.
I usually decorate the front table.

And this year, we did a fry-up or Full Cooked English Breakfast instead of a dinner.
Fun! Everyone had their part in the kitchen or out of it.
My part was cooking Scrambled Eggs. (easier than getting individual fried eggs right!) We had sausage, mushrooms, tomato, baked beans, hash browns, bacon and more!

We are collecting to send to Haiti via MAF - who fly teams of doctors and health professionals, building teams and more to places that are inaccessible. In this case, inaccessible because of the damage.
We have supported them in other ways in the past, including the teams who went to Nepal. MAF has a slogan 'Flying for Life' So they had already planned for a fund raiser called 'Frying for Life'... and we decided we could do it as a meal! And then the Haiti disaster happened, so it gave us even more impetus.

Bubbles-foam for a Cascade

This morning I got a bright idea of making bubbles or foam for a cascade of water.
Crochet several types and colours of threads.

As you do.

Seams on bodice

Finished the seams on the bodice. Each side of each seam took between 6-10 minutes! Pedal to the medal and all.
Do you think it gives a sort of abstracted idea of tree limbs with a bit of foliage between? More things will happen to give it a 3D look. But this is a start - a base.
Beneath the 'tree' will be water, so thinking about the technique for that. I know what it looks like in my head, and I think I know how I will do it.

Seams

After a busy weekend with Harvest and outings to a Drama play with friends, I am back at the current project.

I mentioned joining the parts of the bodice made of hair canvas with fabric that lines as well as turns to the front. I hadn't thought about how much the quilting fabric would fray. But, I found a solution that adds to what I am trying to show.
One of the seams...caught down with a fancy featherstitch from my machine.
The seams were meant to be like foliage peeking between limbs of a tree anyway, so this works well. The little frayed bits will eventually add to the whole.

At the moment, the working title is Willows by the Watercourses. So, thinking about developing the willow a bit more. I don't want to recreate a willow, because I want to focus on the water side of it.

Pattern work ad change of use

Today, (between bouts of unexpected pain flare up in my leg - what was that about!) I worked on the pattern. Very nearly like the bodice of Golden Grace, but not.

Cut from dark brown horse hair braid No, hair canvas. (I knew I would do that!)
Why? not for structure, but because it is the right colour and texture!

Change of use permitted. Is that something like artistic license?

and because it is not for a medieval monk, (if anyone actually wore this it would be very bad for the skin), this is being the lining which will cover the edges as well and peek through the gaps in the seams.

I think.

Hunter - Gatherer Stage

There is a SAQA call for entry coming up called H2OH!. They are accepting wearables.
I had thought maybe to develop further my Ripples and Swirls top from the Pattern Review Sewing Bee...add beads in an 'eddy' here and there. But it is so very comfortable I don't want to lose sight of it should it be accepted!
Furthermore, a small top in a big place would not make much of a statement. So, I have been thinking and have had an idea for something watery for sometime. So, I am going with it. I have had a few more thoughts and bright ideas and now it is time to begin to develop it.

SO, today I started the Hunter-Gatherer stage. Collecting fabrics and embellishments which might contribute to the whole.
I am also not yet at the stage where I want to say what I have in mind, but it will come!

Fabrics

Embellishments

I may add to this and will almost definitely take some things away. I guess you would call it a palette from which I will work.

I have also oiled Mademoiselle because she squeaks very loudly as you turn her this way and that draping and stitching things. This was almost too much when I was stitching on the 'tears' to the last piece!

And should these pieces not be accepted, no worries. It will mean I am ahead with garments for shows! The solo show the last 2 weeks of March at Lady Sew and Sew, Henley Art Trail and The fashion show at the Festival of Quilts.

And the bead keeps going on and on...1-8 October

week 40- Oct 2016
I decided on copper metallic sequins. More in keeping with the rest of the things I have been doing. The bright orange will come in handy for something else I am sure! I realised that my blue sequins I will use in December are metallic, so too, I think have other ones been.

orange sequins for the daily beading

Too much over doing Even more meetings and not enough recovery catching up going on around here.
However...
... On Thursday, after asking at all the bead stands I could find at K+S who did not have orange sequins, I finally found some at Glitterati.

Well, they shout ORANGE. and I am not sure about how much they overwhelm the more subtle orange beads I will be using. The sort of look like Halloween which was not my intent for October. I wanted to say Autumn.

The sequins I have used for other colours are translucent, these are matt. I knew they were bright, but after getting home and using these, they seem are fairly florescent.
So, I am deliberating about using copper ones after all.
What do you think? The 2 bits I have already sewn are using the new bright sequins.

For comparison, orange sequins from last year when I ran out:
orange translucent on left and a goldish one I thought was most like the first.

So, still working this out. Sorry there is so much catching up going on with this project lately! I am thinking that I need to really cut back on how much time this is using up.
Or do less?

Stitching at Knitting and Stitching

Just a couple photos from going to the Knitting and Stitching Show on Thursday.

One of the first things:
Getting involved with a communal stitching project...based on an idea in the book shown about how girls were judged on the amount of their stitches. This was part of the exhibition by the group Un.Fold.

So, we took 2 pieces of calico and did stitches. Competitive if you wanted. I have never took the time to aim for few and/or even (or even straight!).
They counted the stitches and wrote them on the tag. Well, I counted them and wrote a number, but she said to count the ones on back as well! Ok. So it was 56.
They are going to do something with all of them at some point.

Also:
I found another person working with fishing net techniques! Gail Baxter All under the name of contemporary lace.

Now you see 2 makes it not so strange. She was also excited that someone else saw the potential. Only she has discovered further 'stitches' and shapes!
Start with one thread and get a circle by adding some (I need her to tell me how!)

And the bead keeps going on and on...25-30 September

Finally* last week's beads.

week 39- Sept 2016

The beaded fabric square for 1 October will go with this week. I am hoping to find wee small orange sequins to finish them - else we will have to go with copper. All the others have translucent though.

and all of September's beaded tassels. I Loved working with these colours...and having them glowing at me from the beading corner!

*Last week really did a number on me! So, much recovering. and actually I am pleased to say that I am quite glad I didn't get through to Round 4 of the Pattern Review Sewing Bee. But on the other hand, it is just my thing! You can see the notice and rules here.

Colette Rue - my version

Then, having completed 'Tears' and submitted to SAQA before the end of September and even before bedtime on Friday - with help from Mr. Thoughtful who did the photos.... Why do I always do work that cameras can't focus on? ...fabric, rust, quarts crystals, what do you mean focus?
...
I then worked ALL day Saturday to make the dress for the 3rd round of the Pattern Review Sewing Bee. Okay 10:30am start, but that is early for me to get in here to work. and 15min for lunch and a bit of time to make dinner. So, 10:30am started cutting and completed the review at 12:30am late night.
If you want more of the details, you can read it here. As you remember, we were to make a garment using a Colette Rue dress pattern which was provided.

Never again will I cut and make a whole lined dress in one day, Thankyouverymuch.

And here are some photos.
Keep in mind they were taken at 11pm and thereafter.

Tears for the Daughters of My People

So, nose to the grindstone the past few days. But both deadlines accomplished.
Not, however the beads, but I will do them tomorrow.

Photos of the SAQA Layered Voices piece:

detail

Tears for the Daughters of My People

Imagine this: 275 girls from your child’s school are abducted. 47 escape. 3 ½ years later, 228 are still missing. Furthermore, in the last 5 years, on average 38 women/children are abducted each month from your area.
This is Nigeria. Hearts bleed.
Shed tears for the daughters of their people.

Materials: waxed twine, cotton pearle and linen threads. Reclaimed cotton, cotton lawn, and quartz stone chips.
Techniques: rust dyeing, knotting for nets, machine and hand stitch, beading.

front

back

So, Wednesday and Thursday I stitched 266 quartz chips (tears) to the dress. 228 for the missing Chibook girls Plus 38 to stand for the nameless ones abducted each month.

This was the first time they are accepting wearables, so I wanted to really say something. and a big change from my 'Fantasticals'. I hope they do want this piece. I have also entered Ramshackle Villages which returned from the European Triennial last month.
********************
And also I received word that Ramshackle Place, my donation for the SAQA Benefit Auction was sold before the lowest price! So, that is good to hear!
