Garments with stories

As you know, I love garments with a story behind them. So, here are a few.

Fun things at FOQ

A wonderfully drooling Fish Monster!

By Daisy May Collingridge
If you got the Quilt Angel to press the button, you could hear him say something like I like Fish. But by the time I got to really looking on the Sunday, the battery had run down. The QA was trying to get it to play for a little girl.

Wonderful textures achieved by the quilting.

The thing that impressed me was the excellent execution of the design. Not everything you get in your head comes out well! But more than that, the technique was also done to a high standard.
I think this should definitely go to live at a library!

A bit more grown up.

Love the articulated trunk

purchases at FOQ

This year I didn't have as much money saved up because of going to America earlier in the year. But being very judicious, I managed to get what I needed with one or two new ideas.
And asking around at Wonderfil about threads lead to being offered a sample pack which they give to teacher. (I may have an opportunity to do some more workshops.)

As usual I was co-ordinating the stewarding for the SAQA exhibition. Just across the path to one side was Philippa Naylor's stand. I was quite impressed by the ingenuous way to display her scarves.

And a few of her garments. Philippa started out as a fashion designer.

I loved this jacket with the wonderful twist across to behave like a scarf!

I also got some close up photos of the stitching she does on her quilts.

I thanked her for breaking the fear barrier for me about machine quilting. I took my Mother-in-law to the Quilt Museum in York one time years ago. Philippa was doing a demo. When I saw that she does all that amazing work on a domestic machine going chug-chug-chug, I decided I could do machine quilting!

I overheard Phillip say to someone that she likes to challenge herself, talking of trying out her techniques on a small scale.
and here in the miniature section...
All of the above designs are solely credited to Philippa Naylor.

Okay, that one looks a bit wild!

The beads I have selected are to go with one colour of the flat springs. And it will be an interesting thing to discover how they go with the others. So, for instance, the first week the beads were selected to go with the pink spring. The next week they were selected to go with the blue spring; and now they are selected to go with the red spring.

And the bead keeps going on...2-8 August

Week 32 - Aug 2015
Delayed
I changed my mind about the order of things. I said I had settled for 5 of each of enough colours to make up to 30...plus one. But when I came to it, I realised that would mean scouring around for different beads, because I am pretty much sticking to making them different every day, even though that is sometimes subtle.

So, instead, I am doing 6 days of the same beads and changing the colour of the flat spring each day...then rotate through the springs again with a different set of beads.
I am sure you aren't too fussed! But it is my record.

Young designers

At the Fashion Show at the Festival of Quilts, they had work by some young designers from the Inkberrow Design School. And I do mean young!

They first came out under a patchwork Dragon they made.

But this lad really impressed. He is doing his own pattern cutting!

He did the drafting for this suit!

I spoke to his mum afterwards. She says he has his own mind about things and is already really focussed. But a little like someone in this house used to be, can't see the point in learning things that he doesn't think would help him in that goal! But oh well, he has plenty of time to learn.

Lilac and Lace update

Services resuming...I was at Festival of Quilts last week and have been catching up since I returned. I have tried to post but something was not working.
Today I have Googled why, only to find that the new Windows 10 with special browser which The Thoughtful Man uploaded while I was away, does not support Blogger - or Blogger doesn't support it..or something. So, I am using a different Browser to get the photos up. Grr. Apparently something is in the works to get them to talk to each other again.

ANYWAY...

As you may remember, the gown Lilac and Lace was going to be in the Fashion Show at Festival of Quilts.

Let's just say. It was in the fashion show.

Words have been said about the fact that it was lumped in with a couple other designers all classed as a Bridal Collection - which they weren't - and no mention was made of who made it (me) nor was the blurb read out which I had submitted.

I won't go into all the rest, but the lady who organised was appalled and 'plans are afoot' and all that. And I have been specifically asked to do a gown for next year.

So, I am adding some of the photos I took before I went.

A positive thing to come from it all? Zandra Rhodes also had work in the show....

=^D so there.

I have had work in a fashion show where Zandra Rhodes had work!
